Description
ASL19, Persian for Article 19, is a technology and media organization that helps people access information, circumvent censorship and counter misinformation. Our team is based in Toronto but currently work in a hybrid format.
We are recruiting a Community Coordinator to support our wider community and organize a variety of online and in-person events and programs. In the past ten years, our community has been a unique space that brings together diverse key stakeholders, including civil society groups, media organizations, independent activists, developers, funders and policy-makers in support of internet freedom and civil society goals in Iran. The Community Coordinator will help grow a strong community by leading the coordination, logistics, program planning and implementation alongside the team, Organizing Committee, and community members.
Our ideal candidate is passionate about working with people, organizing events, building networks and growing communities. They care about digital rights, and have a good understanding of human rights issues in Iran. They are organized, detail-oriented and a good communicator. The candidate will preferably have experience in event organizing, facilitation, and/or working with diverse communities. They should be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
As our projects incorporate high user security and privacy protections, we require the successful candidate to understand user privacy and discretion, and can hold themselves to high standards of confidentiality and integrity. Responsibilities

Coordinate an Iran-focused Incident-Response and Shutdown Task Force (a task force dedicated to addressing censorship events in the context of Iran)

Work closely with the team, Organizing Committee, and community members to stimulate community-wide collaboration and to build synergy and partnerships

Support the strategic planning and implementation for community building and long-term sustainability initiatives

Coordinate and deliver programs while working closely with other key stakeholders to identify room for growth

Partner with community members to plan and facilitate year-round engagement opportunities, such as monthly online discussions, psychosocial programming, working groups, and workshops

Ensure smooth flow of online and in-person events, including managing registration, liaising with session moderators, notetakers, etc

Facilitate in-person working group sessions at international events for Task Force

Host emergency meetings during times of crisis and heavy disruptions as needed

Deliver bi-monthly online sessions for the Task Force

Conduct outreach and liaise with external partners and contractors, including venues and vendors, for in-person events

Coordinate the logistics for participants’ travel and accommodation, including visas, for in-person events

Help integrate and onboard new community members

Oversee and maintain the communications channels, including event communications, monthly online newsletters, and surveys

Utilize existing online platforms to share the Task Force’s learning and updates with the wider community

Moderate participant engagement and communications on various platforms in accordance to the Code of Conduct and report incidents to the Code of Conduct Committee when appropriate

Manage event budget and financials, including receipts and documentation

Document and report on community activities and impacts to our key stakeholders

This role will involve international travel to plan and organize community events and meet with community stakeholders

Handle and protect confidential information with the highest level of discretion

Other administrative and support tasks as relevant to this position
Qualifications:

3+ years of experience with online and in-person event planning and facilitation experience, preferably with diverse groups of participants and multi-sectoral stakeholders

3+ years of demonstrated experience in the nonprofit or human rights fields or related private sector work focused on community building and engagement

Understanding of internet freedom and censorship-related issues

Experience in project management and coordination with internal and external stakeholders, including civil society and human rights organizations

Effective written and oral communications skills in English, with great interpersonal skills

Experience in digital communications, including content and social media strategy

Resourceful and able to think and act quickly, especially if things don’t go to plan

A strong eye for detail

Highly organized; ability to prioritize and multitask effectively, with excellent time management skills

Experience in remote work and collaboration
