Much has been written of late about the importance of giving good attention to our social universe – nurturing our existing relationships and continuing to create new connections, especially as we age. The authors of The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness would say that doing so is the route to happiness. There’s also scientific evidence to show having good relationships contributes to longevity by positively impacting our health.
WHAT DOES YOUR SOCIAL UNIVERSE LOOK LIKE?
Many people find their social universe (and consequently their world) shrinks when they retire. Whether they want to stay in touch or not, they miss the daily interactions with their colleagues, staff, clients, and members of their professional network.
WHAT TO DO WHEN MAKING NEW FRIENDS SEEMS TO GET HARDER THE OLDER WE GET?
If you’re a natural-born “joiner” this may not be an issue for you. You’re probably already a member of a couple of groups that get together regularly, and you have no compunction about checking our new ones where your “tribe” might be hanging out.
BUT WHAT IF THAT ISN’T YOU?
All is not lost. It may be that your existing social universe contains veins of gold you’ve never noticed before. Mining them can be the start of beautiful, new friendships. And that’s just one strategy.
