Philanthropy. Originally derived from the phrase in Ancient Greek ‘to love people’ is now the action of giving to others towards the common good. Since 1960, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has unified and framed philanthropy around the world through 240 chapters and over 30,000 members.
One of the main forms of uniting philanthropists around the world is through National Philanthropy Day. Established in 1986 in the United States by President Ronald Reagan, and then established by the National Philanthropy Day Act in Canada in 2012, this occasion is annually observed on November 15, and highlights outstanding charitable activities.
The Greater Vancouver chapter will be hosting its 25th Annual National Philanthropy Day on November 25, 2022. This year AFP Greater Vancouver will be presenting the Giving Hearts Awards to the recipients for the following categories: Outstanding Corporation, Outstanding Legacy Philanthropist, Outstanding Professional Fundraiser, Outstanding Small Business, Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser, Outstanding Youth Philanthropist, and the Spirit of Generosity.
It has been two years since we came together and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate in-person again. We have one of the most beautiful venues in Vancouver, the JW Marriot Parq hotel, to host the event. We have Global News reporter and anchor, Sarah MacDonald, as emcee, and an amazing list of Giving Hearts Awards recipients to date. Kevin McCort, President and CEO at Vancouver Foundation, will be the keynote speaker and Tracy London, President of AFP Greater Vancouver will facilitate the event. We are also proud to acknowledge that we will be on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh land on this special occasion.
“As fundraisers, we all hold a responsibility to be agents of change within the social impact sector. It is a special moment when we come together as a community to celebrate our collective achievements to achieve change that benefits society. At the same time, it is important that we use that very moment to also be self-reflective on how there is so much more for us to achieve in unlearning our biases and decolonizing the structures within where we work.” Tracy London, President of AFP Greater Vancouver.
A day that unites philanthropists annually and signifies the importance of working together for the common good, National Philanthropy Day is an event that should not be missed. Especially after two years of not being able to formally commend the generosity of the recipients together, or to unite as professionals and philanthropists to acknowledge our work, it is well overdue that we celebrate together on our 25th Anniversary this year!
